Beam International Ltd - Summary of News for February 1997

Titles published under
Melbourne House

February saw confirmation for the March 5 release of Beam Software’s highly anticipated "Krush Kill 'N' Destroy", a strategy wargame set in a future post-apocalyptic era of devastation and mutant infested landscapes. This release brings with it the re-emergence of the Melbourne House label. Best known for the titles "Way of the Exploding Fist" and "The Hobbit", Melbourne House is the publisher of "Krush Kill N Destroy" and "Cricket ‘97". The demo version of KKnD, released on the Internet over two months ago, continues to dominate the world download charts reaching 3rd position.
EDGE magazine had this to say in a recent review - "[KKnD] distinguishes itself from the ubiquitous classic by virtue of a subtle sense of humour and a superb one player game, thanks to some brilliantly written AI (Artificial Intelligence) routines. The units too are some of the best in the genre, displaying a wide variety of strengths and weaknesses that create a perfectly balanced real time wargame".
Cricket ‘97 is the latest sports title developed by Beam Software and published by Melbourne House. Distribution of the title is through Electronic Arts. Cricket ‘97 has been released in Australia and New Zealand and UK release is scheduled for April 1997 in time for the cricket season there. The vast improvements Beam has put into this product over it’s predecessor, have no doubt been responsible for making this the #1 best-selling PC CD-ROM sports title in Australia, and #3 overall!
Educational Multimedia
An amazing response was generated early this month from Beam’s demonstration of the "Languages for Kids" series at the Milia ‘97 trade show in Cannes. "Languages for Kids" is an educational multimedia series of 11 titles designed to teach a second language to children 5 - 9 years old.
The series, in development jointly by Beam and the Australian Multimedia Enterprise Ltd, employs an innovative and immersive approach to teaching languages, using fun games and activities to impart educational content of the highest quality. Languages covered are English as a second language, major Asian languages (Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Indonesian) as well as major European languages. The series is expected to be completed by December 1997. Distribution and licensing agreements are expected to be signed in all major territories in the next few months.

People and Appointments
This month also saw the appointment of an additional non-executive director to the Beam International board, Dr Terrence Cutler. Dr. Cutler is the head of Cutler & Company, a consultancy firm specialising in the telecommunications industry. He advises companies and industry on corporate strategy and policy issues. "The person we envisaged would be experienced in the industry and would add to the skills, experience and contacts already available to the company. Dr Cutler surpasses this criteria." Commented Alfred Milgrom, chairman of Beam International. "I am absolutely thrilled to have Dr. Cutler join our board".
