The next Digital Heritage research group meeting will be on Tuesday 23rd July, 12-2pm. At this meeting, some of the Play It Again team will talk about the work they’re doing for the “Popular Memory Archive” which is currently under construction. Here is a short blurb:
The Popular Memory Archive will invite fans, collectors, game designers, players and journalists from the 1980s to contribute what they know and any software and artifacts they own to this online space. To facilitate this process, relationships with existing fan communities will be nurtured. Short videos from major industry figures will be recorded and used to attract fans to the Popular Memory Archive. The involvement of game designers in these online discussions will help to encourage discourse and ensure the veracity of information provided. Fan produced artefacts such as walkthroughs and hand drawn game maps will also be sought through these communities. This will create an invaluable resource that documents the games as understood through experience rather than simply artefact. It will encourage and support audiences as active participants in the creation and exchange of knowledge, ‘meaning making’ within the museum, and address the all important player-producer culture that surrounds the history of videogames. A draft research paper on this is available here.
But first we’d like to kick off with some updates about what’s new and newsworthy in digital heritage, so please come along and contribute what’s been happening.
We’ll be meeting in Humanities, Room 101. This is on the ground floor of the inner courtyard of the Humanities Building at Flinders Uni, just along from the glass doors which lead to the library entrance. A map is available here, and it’s building #31. Carpark 5 is the closest.
BYO lunch.
All are welcome, so please share this with people who might be interested. Feel free to join our listserv here to be notified of future meetings and events in the Adelaide area. Hope to see you.
